Combinar el arte y el activismo social o político es algo que se ha hecho e multitud de ocasiones. Pero desde hace algún tiempo, muchos artistas, cantantes y grupos, han preferido mantenerse al margen de conflictos y militancias y cantar al amor, a la noche o a los gorriones antes que adoptar una postura contraria a la guerra, la explotación, la discriminación por sexo, raza o religión, los prejuicios, etcétera -motivos para protestar o enfadarse hay más que suficientes-. Posiblemente muchos tengan miedo a represalias, a ser ignorados o a perder seguidores que no coincidan con sus opiniones expresadas/cantadas. Parece ser que este no es el caso de Great Caesar.

Esta banda, formada en 2012 en Brooklyn, Nueva York, no se arredra y combina arte y activismo y en el video, largo videoclip, de la canción “Don´t Ask Me Why” yuxtaponen el movimiento por los derechos civiles de la década de los sesenta con la actual lucha por la igualdad sexual. Con el apoyo de figuras relevantes como Russell Simons, el dueño del famoso sello discográfico de hip-hop Def Jam Recordings, el actor Arsenio Hall, el rapero y actor Wyclef Jean, el médico, comunicador y escritor indio Deepak Chopra o el ganador de la Superbowl y defensor del colectivo LGBT (lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y transexuales), Brandon Ayanbadejo, Great Caesar ya han desafiado a cientos de miles de personas a tomar partido por la igualdad. Una lucha en contra de los prejuicios y a favor del respeto.

A través de un sonido de indie rock, en el que se nota que ponen a partes iguales talento y corazón, crean una música con la que se enfrentan a aquello que realmente importa, como el amor, la complejidad de las relaciones humanas, el pasado y el futuro. Unas canciones que encajan entre bandas como Arcade Fire o Beirut, incluso con Proclaimers, y a las que dotan de una fuerte originalidad y emotividad.

Great Caesar tiene además una formación muy particular, voces, guitarras, bajo, trompeta y saxo lo que les otorga un gran colorido. Cuando el cantante y guitarrista John Michael Parker escribió la letra de “Don´t Ask Me Why”, la banda intuyó que tenían algo grande entre manos y se pusieron a trabajar en ella. Más de año tardaron en crear una canción que fuera una historia y en preparar un vidioclip, casi una película, que financiaron a través de una campaña de crowfunding cuyo objetivo era obtener 35.000 dólares pero que superaron con creces llegando a los 50.000.

El clip y la canción han tenido una respuesta abrumadora y ya ha sido emitido por la MTV en varias ocasiones, algo sorprendente con una banda tan novata que tan sólo tiene un Ep con cuatro canciones. Su álbum de debut probablemente estará listo antes de que acabe este año 2014.

a spot where they could be at ease.
It was the highest point that they could see,
rose far above the tallest trees,
so naturally they became king and queen.
But before they’d laid their regal grounds,
the sky had darkened all around,
the heavens broke, and rain began to fall.
The lightening cracked,
the thunder clapped,
and soon the king and queen
were trapped on an island sinking in the rising flood.
Well poor Marie, she said, «The end’s begun!
I’ve always had a place to run,
I’m certain that this night will be our last.»
But ‘Gill said,
«Marie, you wouldn’t believe what lies inside of you and me —
take my hand and we can be at peace.

«So lay down and close your eyes,
you’ve got some dreaming before you die.
I’ve got this feeling,
don’t ask me why, don’t ask me why, don’t ask me why.

– «I promise you this too shall pass, even if this night is our last.»
– «I’m afraid that I’ve made a mistake choosing to stay.»

For forty hours the storm raged on,
and Gill, he said,
«I had it wrong — if we don’t leave we’re surely going to die.»
But sweet Marie, she said,
«I see the light — my dear McGill, you had it right,
we just needed a little faith before we fly!
Because I’ve dreamed of what this world could be,
in all its possibility,
and I’ll be damned if I don’t get to see.
So take my hand and hold it tight,
we’re gonna make it out alright,
jump with me and promise to believe.»
