Se hicieron populares por su participación en la película de los hermanos Coen “O Brother”, aunque la historia de The Fairfield Four se remonta a casi cien años atrás, cuando los miembros originales comenzaron a cantar en la Iglesia Bautista de Fairfield, en Nashville. Desde entonces el grupo ha recibido numerosos honores, incluyendo dos premios Grammy, el premio National Heritage, que viene a ser algo así como nombrarles patrimonio nacional, y por supuesto ya hace mucho que ingresaron en el Salón de la Fama de la Música Gospel. Son una institución y una leyenda.

Fundado en 1.921 en Nashivlle, Tennessee, The Fairfield Four ha mantenido su autenticidad a través del tiempo gracias a su fidelidad a los modelos más tradicionales y ejemplares como Bessemer Sunset Four, The Birmingham Jubilee Singers o The Famous Blue Jay Singers con el gran Silas Steele al frente, y en general los más arraigados componentes del llamado Birmingham Sound. Voces excelsas que son magníficamente trabajadas en el seno de los coros de las iglesias de todo el estado y que conjuntan sus voces en pro de una espiritualidad que, al margen de creencias y opiniones religiosas, provocan una enorme emoción y una sincera admiración. Es increíble que haya una persona que cante así de bien. Más que haya dos que canten así de bien. Y ya es la repera que se junten cuatro o seis o doce… y suenen a pura gloria.

El canto de The Fairfield Four al final del film “O Brother” llamó la atención de todo el mundo, pero ellos ya estaban allí mucho antes y siempre haciendo esas mismas maravillas. Y siguen vivos y bien cantando aquellas mismas canciones. Tal vez es por eso que tienen numerosos admiradores, algunos tan ilustres como John Fogerty, de la Creedence Clearwater Revival, quien amaba la raigambre de su sonido y decidió contar con ellos para su segundo álbum tras su regreso, “Blue Moon Swamp”, y que participasen en el tema “A Hundred And Ten In The Shade”. Tras esa primera colaboración ha contado en numerosas ocasiones con The Fairfield Four para abrir sus conciertos.

“Children, Go Where I Send Thee” es una canción espiritual que proviene de la tradición afroamericana y que también es conocida por otros títulos, como “Born In Bethlehem” o “The Holy Baby”. Es una especie de carrusel en el que se van enumerando versos y paulatinamente se aumenta el número de voces y la intensidad del coro y la base emocional. Con el paso de los años se han realizado numerosas versiones y en cada una de ellas se da un significado diferente a la numeración del uno al doce que realiza la canción.

Aquí The Fairfield Four se muestran simplemente sublimes. Cuatro voces venerables e increíbles entre las que, por destacar una, cabe señalar la del bajo, que en lugar de garganta debe tener un pozo sin fondo. Impresionante.
