La música del cantautor y pianista Julian Velard ha sido definida como una sorprendente y rara combinación entre las melodías más pegadizas y los recursos más intrincados. Este músico, nacido en el Upper West Side de Manhattan, sabe dar al estereotipo de canciones de piano-pop un toque refrescante y teatral y contar, con un tono mordaz, historias ingeniosas y un toque de elegancia.

Su madre había sido actriz en Alabama antes de trasladarse a Nueva York para convertirse en un agente inmobiliario y su padre fue un superviviente del Holocausto nazi que emigró de París a Estados Unidos en 1963 para dedicarse a la informática. En ese ambiente se crió Julian quien tuvo como compañeros en el Instituto Fiorello H. LaGuardia de Música y Arte, llamado “La Esculea de la Fama” al actor Adrian Grenier y a la cantante Kelis, entre otros. Después, la música y el piano centraron sus estudios.

De vuelta a su ciudad y tras realizar varios trabajos que nada tenían que ver con la música, consigue ahorrar y se auto-edita en 2003 su primer álbum “Nitetime”, una mezcla de jazz y pop y grabado en vivo, al que le sigue poco después otro Lp, “Make Me Feel 3.27.03”. Tres años tarda en publicar un nuevo trabajo, un Ep titulado “The Movies Without You”, que le abre las puertas del Reino Unido, en donde consigue un contrato discográfico y ser telonero de la cantante escocesa Amy MacDonald.

Velard tiene buen ojo para escribir canciones y se convierte en cronista de personajes y sentimientos que se mueven a su alrededor, como hacía en su momento Billy Joel. A esta faceta le añade una mirada tierna pero también salpicada de comentarios irónicos y corrosivos, al estilo Randy Newman, y un punto de refinamiento, en la onda de Harry Connick Jr. pero en plan hipster. También se le ha comparado con Tom Waits y Harry Nilsson. Pues sí.

Su nuevo álbum, el cuarto de su carrera, “If You Don´t Like It, You Can Leave”, es un disco conceptual sobre Nueva York, tan protagonista como sus habitantes que rebosan esperanza y dolor y cuya vida transcurre entre asuntos cotidianos, como tomar el transporte público, comer o pasear, y los personales como enamorarse o la soledad. Aquí Julian muestra su momento más innovador, imaginativo y personal. Nueve canciones muy originales acerca de la felicidad y de la angustia, con divertidas y disparatadas propuestas románticas y baladas que apuntan directamente al corazón.

Julian escribió “No One´s Getting Married Tonight” sobre lo innecesario que resulta casarse cuando se está realmente enamorado y decidió aprovechar su propia boda para grabar el videoclip. Tanto la novia como los invitados fueron pillados por sorpresa y casi obligados a pasar por el set de grabación. Al parecer, la sincronización de los labios con la canción mejoraba ostensiblemente cuanto más borrachos estaban los asistentes al enlace. Nos lo creemos.
