En su momento, “Tempted” no obtuvo un gran éxito en las listas de ventas, pero con el paso del tiempo, su enorme calidad se ha impuesto y se ha convertido en una de las mejores composiciones de Squeeze, grupo emblemático de la nueva ola británica de finales de los setenta y principios de los ochenta, y también de aquellos dorados años.

Squeeze provenía del sureste de Londres y empezó una excelente carrera musical en 1.974, que duró inicialmente hasta el 82, cuando se separaron por primera vez. Se volvieron a reunir en 1.985 y aguantaron otros catorce años, tras esa nueva ruptura, el grupo se puso en marcha en 2.007 para ofrecer, en principio, una serie de conciertos por Estados Unidos y Gran Bretaña y por ahí siguen todavía dando giras de vez en cuando. Repertorio y clase tienen para aguantar varios siglos.

El grupo se formó sobre tres sólidos pilares, los cantantes, guitarristas y compositores Glen Tilbrook, Chirs Difford y el teclista Jools Holland, quien desde hace tiempo regenta en la cadena de televisión BBC uno de los mejores programas musicales del planeta. Su debut discográfico llegó en 1.979 con un Lp titulado con el nombre de la banda y con la producción del mismísimo ex Velvet Underground John Cale y dejó claro que, aunque inmersos en los nuevos aires británicos, tenían una personalidad muy marcada y su música aunaba con tremendo acierto la new wave, el pub rock, el power pop y hasta algunos detalles de punk y post punk.

Sus dos siguientes álbumes son para enmarcar, “Cool For Cats”, de 1.979, y “Argybargy” del año siguiente. Y así, con una regularidad casi exacta fueron entregando disco por año. En el 81 publicaron “East Side Story”, producido por Roger Bechirian (Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, The Undertones…) y un joven carismático llamado Elvis Costello. Este disco supuso un paso adelante y su madurez total al desarrollar influencias de rhythm and blues, merseybeat, psicodelia y soul blanco británico (blue-eyed soul), entre otras hierbas. Una gran obra, a la que se había incorporado un nuevo teclista, Paul Carrack, que sin embargo no tuvo una especial repercusión.

“Tempted” fue el segundo sencillo que se extrajo de este cuarto álbum de Squeeze y en ningún país superó el puesto cuarenta de las listas de éxito, sin embargo hoy en día es uno de sus temas más solicitados. Fue compuesto por Tilbrook y Difford pero esta vez no fue cantado por ninguno de ellos, que era lo habitual, sino por Carrack, una de las mejores voces que ha dado el Reino Unido y un músico muy curtido que antes de recalar en Squeeze había militado en una banda de buen pub rock llamada Ace y en Roxy Music, con los que llegó a grabar, como miembro, el álbum “Manifesto”.

Una canción perfecta, con una cadencia arrebatadora, unos teclados mágicos y una voz única. Es lógico que se haya conservado tan bien, lo tiene todo. Además ha sido usada en numerosas campañas de publicidad, Heineken, Burger King y muchas más, ha sido versionada infinidad de veces e incluso aparece en alguna película, como la dirigida en 1.994 por Ben Stiller “Reality Bites”, con Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke y Renée Zelwager.
