Matt Berninger es uno de los participantes en un tributo que plantea Verve Records a The Velvet Underground.
El músico y cantante estadounidense Matt Berninger, conocido principalmente por ser el líder de la banda de indie rock The National, versiona “I’m Waiting For The Man”, segundo adelanto del disco “I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico”. Este disco tributo a una de las bandas más fundamentales de la historia del rock y autora del mítico álbum del plátano en la portada (obra de Andy Warhol), fue producido por el querido amigo y productor de Lou Reed, Hak Willner, quien falleció el pasado año. El álbum de homenaje a la Velvet, y también a Willner, se publicará el 24 de septiembre a través de Verve Records, el sello original de Velvet Underground. El álbum cuenta con la participación de artistas de fama mundial como Michael Stipe de R.E.M., Matt Berninger, Sharon Van Etten con Angel Olsen, Andrew Bird, Lucius, Kurt VIle & The Violators, St. Vincent & Thomas Barlett, Thurston Moore, Bobby Gillespie, King Princess, Courtney Barnett, Fontaines D.C. e Iggy Pop & Matt Sweeney. El primer adelanto y single principal del álbum, fue una versión de “Run Run Run” a cargo de Kurt Vile & The Violators, y fue publicado hace unas semanas, así que también está ya disponible. Por supuesto, también están accesibles artículos autografiados limitados, incluidos vinilos, por Kurt Vile y otros artistas.
“I’ll Be Your Mirror” fue supervisado y producido por Hal Willner, el querido amigo y productor de Lou Reed que falleció el año pasado. Willner fue el maestro del álbum, logrando que con cada canción la magnitud del artista y la obra se amplíe en consideración. En particular, se veía a sí mismo como el protector principal del legado de Reed y el cuidado y el amor que sentía por el trabajo de su amigo es palpable en cada nota de “I’ll Be Your Mirror”. El álbum tributo fue concebido en 2017 al mismo tiempo que Todd Haynes firmó para dirigir “The Velvet Underground”, la muy esperada película original de Apple sobre la banda que acaba de estrenarse en el festival de Cannes 2021 recibiendo críticas favorables. La cinta estará disponible en Apple TV a partir del 15 de octubre. Por cierto, una parte de las ganancias de este disco se destinará a Amnistía Internacional EE. UU., una organización mundial con una base formada por millones de personas dedicada a exigir y luchar por los derechos humanos para todas las personas. El fundador de Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, fue un apoyo activo de Amnistía Internacional EE. UU.
