Primo del Nobel de Literatura T.S. Eliot, fue profesor universitario y presidente de Harvard entre los años 1869 y 1909, a él se debe la conversión de Harvard en una de las principales, sino la principal, universidad americana y no solo en la más antigua de todas ellas. Nació en una familia acomodada y, hasta que su padre se arruinó en 1957, no tuvo problemas económicos; se casó dos veces y tuvo cuatro hijos, todos en su primer matrimonio.

Cuando abandonó sus clases en Harvard su entorno pensaba que lo hacía para dedicarse a los negocios y sacar adelante a su familia pero, en lugar de eso, Eliot aprovechó una pequeña herencia que recibió de su abuelo para dedicar dos años al estudio de los sistemas educativos europeos. Regresó a Estados Unidos y retomó su trabajo como profesor además de comenzar a difundir su modo de entender la educación y proponer cambios en el sistema que lo llevaron a presidir Harvard y renovar esta universidad.
