Dancehall Domine. The New Pornographers. Vídeo, letra e información.

“Brill Bruisers” es el sexto disco de la banda de Vancouver, Canadá, The New Pornographers. De él ya se han publicado hasta ahora dos sencillos, el que da título al álbum y “War On The East Coast”. “Dancehall Domine” es el tema elegido para ocupar el tercer single, una canción de poderosa sección rítmica, que trae ecos de los mismísimos Devo, guitarras punzantes, en una onda The Cars, y las complejas y atractivas melodías y armonías vocales propias y características del grupo.

En realidad The New Pornographers no es una banda cualquiera, es un supergrupo formado por músicos que o bien proceden de excelentes formaciones con su propia trayectoria o bien tienen sus carreras personales en solitario. Aquí están Carl Newman, también conocido como A.C. Newman, que procede de un gran grupo muy power pop llamado Zumpano y además ha publicado sus discos individuales que no están nada mal. Otro es Dan Bejar, que ha pasado por Swan Lake, Destroyer y Hello, Blue Roses; la cantante Neko Case tiene una excelente discografía personal y en su currículo también pone que ha pasado por The Corn Sister, Cub y Maow. John Collins, el bajista, estuvo en The Evaporators, el guitarrista Todd Fance, además de lo suyo, estuvo en Limblifter. En fin, grandes músicos y con sólidas carreras.

La historia de The New Pornographers empieza en 1999 y es realmente brillante. Su nombre lo eligió el cantante y guitarrista, y también un poco el líder, Carl Newman de una película japonesa de 1966, dirigida por Shohei Imamura y titulada “The Pornographers”. Sus cuatro primeros trabajos discográficos entraron en las listas de los mejores Lp´s en Canadá, su disco de debut, “Mass Romantic” fue elegido por la revista norteamericana Blender entre los mejores álbumes de música indie de todos los tiempos y la gente del magazine Rolling Stone eligió a su segundo Lp, “Electric Version” (2003), como uno de los mejores 100 álbumes de la década.

“Dancehall Domine” es una canción muy pegadiza, que produce un cierto grado de euforia. Incita al movimiento, ya sea baile o actividad laboral o deportiva. El videoclip está dirigido por Michael Leblanc y Scott Cudmore, quienes centran la cámara en la gestualidad del rostro. Tras estas resaltadas expresiones faciales se reproducen una serie de escenas, como fragmentos de programas de entrevistas en blanco y negro, estudios psicodélicos y alguna sutil referencia al director cinematográfico francés Henro-Georges Clouzot y sus opresivas y sórdidas atmósferas.

Una gran banda, sin duda, estos The New Pornographers.
