“Canto y toco la guitarra, la música es mi mejor amigo. Y soy zurda como Hendirx, pero no puedo tocar como él, por cierto ¿sabías que los oso polares también son zurdos?”. Así se presentaba la cantante londinense Kimberly Anne en su página de bandcamp en el otoño de 2011, cuando acababa de colgar su primera canción “Heartbroken Medley”, que al igual que su siguiente composición, “Almost My Feet”, liberada en junio del siguiente año, estaban a disposición de sus seguidores como libre descarga. Dos canciones de folk sencillo, desnudo y muy sentido armados solamente con su voz, una guitarra acústica y mucha emoción.

La primera referencia discográfica seria fue un ep con cinco piezas en las que dejaba constancia de su impresionante voz y de su facilidad para recorrer sentimientos, situaciones y lugares. El disco, titulado “Bury It There”, salió en septiembre de 2012 y contaba con la producción de Julian Simmons, una especie de Rey Midas que convierte en oro todo lo que toca, quien también tocó el piano. Además Kimberly Anne estaba apoyada por una batería, un bajo y otra guitarra más, a parte de la suya. Un refuerzo que ayudaban a realzar este un puñado de excelentes canciones.

Tras conseguir un contrato con Polydor, en enero de 2014 Kimberly presentó un nuevo Ep, “Hard As Hello”, con tres temas más una remezcla de corte principal, el que daba título al disco. Gracias a su particular figura, especialmente por su peinado que la hace muy reconocible, su personalidad interpretando, su habilidad para escribir canciones muy directas y emotivas y su voz, que en ocasiones recuerda a Tracy Chapman o a Joan Armatrading, la popularidad de Kimberly Anne ha ido en continuo crecimiento.

Ella describe su música como “pop acústico casado con el indie y con una relación amorosa con los ritmos brasileños y afro-caribeños” y señala que sus influencias musicales se mueven entre un clásico como Van Morrison y una cantante de rhythm and blues contemporáneo como Mary J. Blige. Todo lo que había en la amplia colección de discos de sus padres y lo que ella misma ha ido descubriendo posteriormente. Kimberly aprendió guitarra ella sola, tocando canciones de The Cure y de Bloc Party y estudió percusión en el África Occidental.

El pasado 7 de agosto salió al mercado el single con la canción “Bury It There”, de la que Kimberly Anne también ha realizado un videoclip. La filmación es obra de The Unthank Alliance, una asociación entre los directores Simon Ryninks y Dino Dimopoulos. En el video ocurre de todo y nada sale bien ni como estaba planificado. Mientras ella canta y avanza lentamente hacia la cámara, en una secuencia muy normal e incluso aparentemente monótona, esto que debería ser un largo plano secuencia con todo perfectamente medido, cronometrado y ajustado… se convierte en una chapuza, sobre todo gracias a un operario bastante patoso. Simpático.
