El veterano músico neoyorquino Willie Nile vuelve a recorrer nuestro país para presentar sobre diversos escenario españoles su último trabajo “If I Was A River”. Se trata de un disco diferente a todo lo que ha hecho hasta el momento, mucho y bueno, por cierto, ya que es un álbum en el que este cantautor de rock del corazón muestra su perfil más íntimo, crudo y descubierto. Sólo piano y voz. Y sus canciones, por supuesto.

El nuevo álbum, el décimo tercero de su carrera, fue grabado con el mismo piano de cola, un impresionante Steinway, que Willie Nile estaba tocando la noche del 8 de diciembre de 1980, la noche en que fue asesinado John Lennon. Nile se encontraba en los estudios The Record Plant de Nueva York registrando su segundo Lp al mismo tiempo que John y Yoko estaban trabajando en otra sala del mismo estudio. Ese piano está cargado de historia porque ha sido utilizado por algunas de las más grandes estrellas del rock and roll, desde Lennon a Springsteen, pasando por Bowie y por genuinos especialistas, verdaderos piano man como Elton John o Randy Newman. Un instrumento que se ha convertido en leyenda y que con el paso de los años ha adquirido un sonido muy especial.

El propio Willie Nile ha confesado que sintió una verdadera emoción al estar en un lugar en el que, 34 años atrás, estuvo John Lennon y que él ahora ha utilizado para grabar su primer álbum de piano, una opción que, al parecer, llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo sopesando y que por fin ha realizado.

En total, Willie Nile ha visitado España en 17 ocasiones, dejando siempre un grato sabor de boca y muy satisfechos a sus seguidores de siempre, así como a todos aquellos que le han ido descubriendo a través de los años. Al igual que en su última gira, Willie estará acompañado por el batería Danny Montgomery (Elliot Murphy, Ray Charles, Taj Mahal) y por el líder de la banda asturiana Stormy Mondays y uno de nuestros músicos más internacionales, Jorge Otero.

El tema “House Of A Thousand Guitars” pertenece al álbum del mismo título y es un sentido recordatorio a todos aquellos músicos que han influido en su vida con sus canciones y con el sonido de su guitarra. Willie Nile menciona a Jimmy Hendrix, a Robert Johnson, a Hank Williams, a Bob Dylan y a los Rolling Stones; y no se olvida de John Lennon, ni de Muddy Waters, ni de John Lee Hooker… músicos, en definitiva, que han sido su fuente de inspiración y su referencia permanente a lo largo de toda su carrera. El videoclip, dirigido por Robert Noonan, muestra al cantante en el estudio durante la grabación de la pieza, acompañado por su banda en ese momento, Andy York, Brad Albetta y Rich Pagano. Al verlo te entran unas ganas terribles de sumarse a ellos y cantar a todo pulmón esta elegía a la guitarra y a la historia del rock.
