Político demócrata y estadounidense, fue presidente de Estados Unidos por una única legislatura, perdió la que hubiera sido su re-elección frente a Roland Reagan y, una vez abandó la Casa Blanca, dedicó su tiempo y esfuerzos, e incluso una fundación -el Centro Carter-, a la defensa de los derechos humanos y a la resolución de conflictos sin recurrir nunca a la violencia. Fue esta labor la que lo llevó a recibir el Premio Nobel de la Paz.

Carter nació en una pequeña población de Georgia, Plains, el 1 de octubre de 1924; vivió desde niño la segregación racial y era al tiempo ajena a ella porque su familia no hacía diferencias en cuanto a estas cuestiones, de hecho uno de sus mejores amigos era de raza negra.

Una próspera carrera política lo llevó hasta la Casa Blanca donde sus profundas convicciones religiosas no le impidieron mantener el dictamen de Roe contra Grey que llevaba a la legalización del aborto aunque con limitaciones. Se le recuerda por haber logrado la firma de los tratados sobre el Canal de Panamá y también por los de Camp David que sellaban un acuerdo entre Israel y Egipto; estableció también relaciones diplomáticas con China.
