Charlotte Brönte fue una escritora británica de vida convulsa, enfermiza y breve que nació en Yorkshire el 21 de abril de 1816. Hija de un clérigo irlandés y miembro de una familia numerosa (tuvo cinco hermanos), ha pasado a la historia por una magnífica novela -Jane Eyre-y por ser una de las tres hermanas Brontë y es que tanto ella como dos de sus hermanas -Anne y Emily- entraron a formar parte del universo literario inglés.

Se quedó huérfana de madre siendo aun niña e iniciaba entonces, junto a sus hermanas, un periplo que convirtió a la tuberculosis y al tifus en tristes y crueles protagonistas de sus vidas; sus dos hermanas mayores -Maria y Elisabeth- murieron de esta enfermedad tras ingresar en un colegio para mujeres; Charlotte y sus hermanas Anne y Emily fueron trasladadas del colegio a la vista del desastre pero finalmente, y tras mostrar su maestría como novelistas, Anne y Emily fallecerían también de tuberculosis e igualmente la propia Charlotte, aunque unos años más tarde, rindió su vida a esta enfermedad a la edad de 38 años.

Si la biografía de las hermanas Brontë es triste se mire por donde se mire, lo es más si cabe la de Charlotte porque cuando la tuberculosis pudo con ella estaba embarazada del que hubiera sido su primer hijo.
